What is Rhinoplasty (nasal aesthetic surgery)?

Rhinoplasty is a term used for surgical procedures performed to make nose look aesthetic, but these procedures can also be required to correct a health problem. Elimination of a disorder with an aesthetic surgery not only helps person breath healthily, but it also creates a nose that looks as the person expects.

Since nose is located exactly at central part of face, it has a very substantial role in how face looks. Even a minor change in nose can affect appearance of face.

Advancing technology and ever improving medical procedures offer too many different and safe methods to correct deformities of nose in terms of structure and shape.

Preparations Before Rhinoplasty

Informing the patient about the surgery by primary surgeon is, in fact, the first step of preoperative process.

Most important issues addressed in the information session are as follows:

Selection of surgeon

Since nasal aesthetic surgeries are very delicate procedures, they should be performed by experienced surgeons to get successful outcomes and prevent unnecessary corrective procedures. You can be informed about the technique by having an online meeting with your doctor.

Surgery Technique

Today, developments and novelties in medicine and technology offer many effective surgical techniques for nasal aesthetic. There is not any technique that can meet needs of all patients. It is useful to talk this matter with your surgeon in preoperative information session.

Preoperative Preparation

Blood thinners should be stopped one or two weeks before the surgery, as instructed by surgeon.

It is strictly necessary to avoid smoking and tobacco products for a certain period of time before surgery, as they have negative effects on wound healing.

Alcohol consumption should be discontinued for a while to be instructed by your surgeon. Alcohol can cause congestion and bleeding.

After Nasal Surgery

Convalescence after nasal surgery varies according to complexity of the procedure, but patients usually start walking in 4 to 6 hours and eating 6 hours after surgery, if there is no nausea or vomiting. In some cases, patients are discharged in same day, but they can be observed for 1 night at observation room and be discharged on the next day.

Severe edema, swelling and bruising can be observed for 1-2 days after surgery. Most of these complaints substantially disappear at the end of 1 week, but it may take 3 months for swelling and edema disappear completely.

Postoperative Considerations

  • Head should be elevated with 2 or 4 pillows.
  • Since steam of too hot foods will increase bleeding and nasal congestion, too hot foods should not be consumed especially in first week.
  • Cold gel or ice-cube packs can be applied on around eyes and cheeks to alleviate swelling and bruising. You can apply this method up to 72 hours.
  • Solid foods should not be chewed and softer foods should be preferred in first several days after surgery.
  • Workout should be avoided for 2 weeks after surgery.
  • Face can be washed, but wound dressings should not be dampened. Hair should not be washed for one week; hair can be washed in the way hair is washed in coiffeur, if the patient has someone to help him/her. Nasal packs and wound dressings should not be dampened.
  • Sun exposure should be avoided for 6 weeks; otherwise, it will take longer time for facial swelling disappear.
  • Swimming is not allowed for 1 month, as it can cause a trauma.
  • Only the medicines recommended by your surgeon should be used.
  • Eyeglasses should not be worn for 4 weeks.
  • Contact lenses can be used 2 days after surgery.

Although very minor changes are created in rhinoplasty, they can create a substantial change in appearance and function of nose. A healthy nose structure is obtained through procedures performed on bone and cartilaginous tissues of nose, while appearance of nose can be changes to ensure ideal facial ratios.
